Farmers Market

The Original Farmers Market at Third and Fairfax in LA is a true hidden gem. From the street it may look like another strip mall but that is definitely not what is at the heart of this market. What originally started as a gathering of local farmers selling crops to the public grew into a culinary collective with grocers, restaurants, food vendors, and more. They serve up local flavors as well as dishes from around the world. If you are a foodie and haven't been to The Original Farmers Market, it is a must taste. If you are not a foodie, visiting might just convert you. No photos were taken of the inside because it is something that needs to be experienced for oneself.

As you can see below, there is also a tribute Gilmore Oil. The Gilmore family is the reason why the Farmers Market exists today and if you make it over there stop by the Gilmore display to read more about the history of the area.

What can you buy for 25 cents anymore? Five pieces of Skittles out of the candy machine or a handful of goat food at the petting zoo? Those things might be worth your quarter but won't have a very long lasting impression like the best 25 cents ever spent.

Angels Flight

That's right, Angels Flight only costs a quarter per ride and is more than worth the money. In case you are unfamiliar with Angels Flight, it is the shortest railroad in the world. It is located in Downtown Los Angeles in the Bunker Hill district and will save you from walking up or down a hefty flight of stairs from Hill St. to Olive St. It is much more than just a shortcut, though. The ride in the original cable cars really brings the culture of the early 1900s, the year of its conception, back to life. Since automobiles were only owned by the rich during that time, Angels Flight was a very useful mode of transportation. While riding down one of the two carts on this photo shoot day a woman was overheard saying, "This is better than any ride at Knott's Berry Farm." That statement couldn't be more true. Angels Flight is definitely a must ride for all. More information can be found on its official page or in the Angels Flight Wiki.

Next Saturday, October 1st, Pico Rivera Sheriff's station is putting on what they call a benefit "ride". First and foremost, the proceeds benefit peace officers and children in the community who are facing catastrophic financial hardships due to the illness, injury, or death of a spouse or dependent child. The day consists of a "poker run" style motorcycle ride but there is much more than that. At the motorcycle arrival location there will also be a car show, Oktoberfest beer garden, battle of the bands, and MMA style grappling. We will be there to support the cause and you should too. We will not be carrying our entire line so if there is something in particular that you would like to pick up at the show please use the contact page to let us know. Go to: http://www.prvbenefit.com/Overview.php for more information regarding the event.

Devil's Gate Dam

If you've heard the name Devil's Gate, a watershed dam in the Pasadena foothills was probably not what came to mind at first. It is pretty oddball but there is a reason behind the name Devil's Gate Dam: peering from the side of the crevasse at the opening of the dam is a rock formation that looks like the side profile of a devil's face. A common question about our tribute shirt has been "Does it still exist?" So we here at County Of Angels accepted the mission to find out on behalf of us all. Verdict: not only does it still exist (see the photo above, and our gallery, as proof) but it has even been preserved in a concrete cast. Finding the 20-something-foot-tall devil head is actually a pretty neat adventure so if you want to get out for a little nature hike, we highly recommend the trip. And unlike us, plan on visiting during a dry spell; the creek can get pretty high and make the journey a wet one. If you make it out there, post your stories and photos in the Los Angeles Revealed Forum.

Pistol Magazine

We've been tinkering around with the idea of advertising for a long while but we were unsure which outlet was best for CofA. Thankfully, photographer (and avid supporter of our brand) Matt Rascoe contacted us about contributing to a new venture he's a part of with editor-in-cheif Courtney Kitter, PISTOL Magazine. This magazine just debuted in the Spring and is all about custom culture lifestyles with an emphasis on great art, whether it be photography, illustration, fashion, tattooing, car building, etc. We are excited to be a part of their second issue which was just released yesterday, August 29th. Not only did we create a full-page ad but Matt wrote a great piece on our Suicide Bridge shirt in the "Product Review" section. PISTOL Magazine is definitely a great change of pace as far as the reads go so be sure to get your copy by clicking here.

Dim lights

Last Friday night the Queen Mary Dome in Long Beach was jam-packed with Long Beach Roller Derby fans. The Bixby Rollerettes edged out the Terminal Island Tootsies (TITs) with a win but that's not the point; the live show and experience are the reasons to go wee this sport in person.

Long Beach Roller Derby

All pre-judgement aside, the Roller Derby is definitely a rough sport as these gals are extrememly fast, tough and competitive. They definitely lay everything they have all on the line and it shows.

Long Beach Roller Derby

The roller derby even had its own half-time show where Anaheim native Amber Foxx and her band happened to be the featured entertainment. This band is one of our local favorites, as their rockabilly and country-western flavored sets rock every joint they play and this event was no exception. You must give local Roller Derby a viewing sometime!

Dim lights

The overcrowded city of Los Angeles is sometimes unbearable, but when viewed in the right way, it is beautiful. Colin Rich spent 6 months making this piece of art and we thank him for it.

County Of Angels Van

Some of the best driving songs come from truck-driving music and it sounds so good when taking the CofA van out for a spin. There is something about this style of music that creates a surreal nostalgic connection while driving it. After all, vanners in the '70s used to convoy and chatter on CB radios just like the truckers did in the days before cell phones. Van Nuys native Chris "Sugarballs" Sprague, the newest member of the L.A. Revealed Forum, is keeping this nearly-forgotten form of music alive.

Chris

Last Wednesday, his L.A.-based band Chris "Sugarballs" Sprague & His 18 Wheelers celebrated the release of their new CD "Miles Away" at Big's Grill in Fullerton. Not only do these guys play the best truck-driving and traditional country songs, they really know how to entertain the crowd. They were wearing fake 70s 'staches, period-style threads and had Smokey and the Bandit playing on TVs throughout the joint. No one is doing what this band is and going to their shows is a real treat. These guys are no strangers to L.A. and Orange County so be sure to catch them around town.
